Frequently asked questions

Q

Can I paint my COSTAR® carbon monoxide alarm?

No. This is a sensitive biotech product and paint will affect its proper functioning.

Q

How will it know when it's time to replace the batteries?

The COSTAR® CO detector or CO alarm tells you when it needs a new battery by emitting a periodic single chirp every 30 seconds. The instruction manual covers alternate reasons that alert a consumer to replace an alarm.

Q

I have a four-car garage. How many alarms do I need?

You only need one COSTAR® CO alarm in the garage.  The CO alarm may be placed near the center of the garage.

Q

What warranty do you offer on your carbon monoxide detectors?

The COSTAR® CO detector has a six-year limited, manufacturer’s warranty.  This is similar to prorate for tires; however, if you have any problem in the first 2 years after purchase, your CO alarm will be replaced for free.

Q

Do I need more than one COSTAR® carbon monoxide alarm in my house?

For safety purposes and by law in most states, you need one CO alarm for each level of your house.  Quantum recommends that in addition to one on each level you place one CO alarm in each sleeping area and one in your garage. If you sleep with your bedroom doors closed then you need one for each bedroom because the alarm may not wake you through a closed door according to a study first done in Australia.

Q

How do I calibrate my COSTAR® CO alarm?

The COSTAR® CO detector and CO alarm comes already calibrated from the factory and doesn’t require any adjustments.

Q

What do I do when my COSTAR® carbon monoxide detector goes off?

All household members should immediately go outside to breathe fresh air and you should call 911.

Q

How often do I have to change the battery in my CO alarm?

You should test your CO alarm weekly and change the battery each time you change your clock in the fall or when you hear a short chirp every 30 seconds.

Q

Do you have a COSTAR® carbon monoxide alarm or CO detector that I can plug in?

At this time all our CO alarms are battery operated but we do make the COSTAR® model 12-24 system carbon monoxide detector, which is hardwired and backed up with a system battery.

Q

How often do I need to change the sensor in the carbon monoxide detector or CO alarm?

The sensor is good for the lifetime of the CO alarm (6 years) and you should never touch it or attempt to replace or repair it in COSTAR® brand products.
